Box
Ratio
In
box charting (i.e., Equivolume charting), the high price, low price, and
volume for a trading interval (typically a day's worth) are used to plot
a single box. The upper and lower bounds of the box are governed by the
high and low price, respectively. The width of the box is governed by the
volume. Therefore, the shape of the box is dependent on how it is plotted.
Our goal is to optimize our plotting scales in a manner that allows the
user to distinguish thin from fat boxes. With Insider TA,
you need not be concerned with "plotting scales", because that
task is automatically handled by the Viewport Control Panel.
Once a box is plotted on the screen, it's shape is quantified by a box
ratio value. With Insider TA, this is determined by dividing the height
of the box by its width. Note that this is the inverse of Richard Arm's
Equivolume-derived
box ratios although
the end result -- to determine buy and sell locations via the Box Analyzer -- remains
the same. For more information on this topic, we recommend Arms' book titled
Trading Without Fear (click here

・
Thin boxes have box ratios greater than 1
・Fat boxes have box ratios less than 1.
The average box ratio of all visible boxes in the graph window is displayed
in the upper left-hand corner of the box chart.
