Data Merger Utility

Note: If you are using Insider TA
Professional to load Quotes Plus, TC2000, or Metastock data, then you will not need to use this utility. The Data Merger deals with the data management of ASCII files only.

The Data Merger Utility extracts ASCII data from recap files containing daily data for a portfolio of stocks, and automatically appends these data to their respective ASCII stock files (pop-up illustration). To access the Data Merger, click the icon button shown here. The following window will appear...

Principles:

Successful data merging requires that Insider TA know how to parse each line in your recap files. "Parsing" refers to how a line of data should be split into the individual data items. This concept is analagous to Insider TA's ASCII Field Formatter Panel. There are two methods for identifying how a line of data is parsed, and they are chosen by clicking the appropriate radio button under "Separator options":

  • Fixed width
  • Separated by

You must choose which method best conforms to the structure of your
recap files furnished by your data provider. To understand how to work with either of these parsing methods, refer to the ASCII formatter controls

The "File(s) to Process" field is where you enter one or more recap files that you want the Data Merger to process. If more than one are being entered into this field, then separate them with a semi-colon and make sure all of the recap files have the same structure.

    Setup

You are responsible for identifying which ticker symbols get merged to which files. Only the ticker/file entries entered into the Portfolio List File will be processed. These items are entered by clicking the "Portfolio List" button.

    The
Volume Mode Panel is where you identify how the volume data in your recap files are represented. This allows the Data Merger to convert volume modes to match those of each of your stock files.

    Use the
Validate Chronology Button to ensure you don't merge a recap file whose date doesn't match the expected merge dates. This is a helpful warning device should you mistakenly click the "Merge" button twice.

Some recap files might have dashes in place of 0's. In order for the Data Merger recognize these special symbols as being zeroes, use the "
zero-out if input field is..." field.

    Processing

Pressing the "Merge Now" button commences the data-merge process. If a Date Marker String was entered, then Insider TA will display the date it has found in each download file, allowing you to give final approval before appending data to files listed in your Portfolio List File.

If any suspicious data is detected, the
Edit Erroneous Fields Window will appear with further options on what you can do, whether it be to edit the suspect data items, or skip merging for the specific file.

For holidays and other special occasions where the stock market is closed, you may want to enter "zero-trade data" to your portfolio of stocks. Although this is not a requirement, it may be necessary for other software programs that read your data, or to ensure no "holes" exist in the chronology of dates (refer to Insider TA's
    Date Check Function).

NOTE: The "No-Trade" Button was designed for daily data files, in order to ensure that the entire week (Monday through Friday) is accounted for. For weekly files, the "No-Trade" button won't be needed.
