When you scan your data to search for desired criteria, how far back do you want the file scanner to look? Generally, you'll be more concerned with what has happened recently -- maybe within the last week or so -- rather than look back months or years. This is the purpose of the Filter Panel'sview span switch...
The View Span switch governs how far back (in terms of number of entries from the last day) the File Scan Utility should search for passing or failing your filtering criteria. Filtering criteria are input using the Filter Panel's Filter Buttons.
Note: Not all filter criteria pertain to this switch. Only those that have a line connected to the view span switch are significant (move the mouse over the face of the switch, and the lines will temporarily illuminate).
With respect to daily data, the above setting of "5" then reflects a view span of 1 week.
