Quotes Plus Scanning (to build List Files)

PLEASE NOTE: The purpose of this web page is to provide you with a quick start to creating a List File that can be loaded into Insider TA. Stock Blocks, Inc. no longer provides active support for Insider TA's interface with the Quotes Plus database. So any changes they make will no longer be reflected in any of our web pages.

1. Open the QP Scan Database program (Start|Programs|Quotes Plus Release 2.3|Scan Database):

2. In the Scan Database program's menu bar, select "File" and then "Run"...

3. This brings up the "Select Reports/Scans" window. As you can see, the folks at Quotes Plus have provided a vast array of pre-written scans, each with their own effective scanning strategy.

If you scroll down far enough, you might see a scan titled "Imported - Output all symbols", like so...

For any scan, you will need to click the Edit to see what "Output" file is specified (That is the file which you will load into Insider TA). In the above figure, we see that the output will go to a file named "symbols.lst".

Some may prefer not to gather all symbols from the QP database, so a new scan can be created that filters out stocks less than $5. Click the "Add" button...

4. The "Scan Add/Edit" window will appear. Fill in the fields with what is shown below, then click "Done" when finished.

The "Scan Code" text box (see below) is where you put all your scanning instructions. Here, we simply look for any symbol whose low price was at least $5 for the last 20 days. The colored highlightings shown in the Scan Code window are for illustrative purposes only (you won't see them in your window):

-

The first line, highlighted yellow, dictates where you want the list file written. Here, we identified a list file named MOSTALL.LST. By default, this file will be written to Quotes Plus' own list file directory, which is c:\Quotes Plus Data\lists.

You might want the list file written to a different directory. For instance, if you want it written to c:\my_scan_output, then you would enter this line of code: Output="c:\my_scan_output\mostall.lst".

Note: case sensitivity is not important.

-

The second line, highlighted blue, is the comment line. Any text to the right of the double-slash characters (//) is treated as comments. Here, we entered a description of what we are scanning for. This line could just have well been the first line, or last line... its position in the window has no effect. You could also have entered as many additional comment lines as you like.

-

In the third line, we get into the QP scanning code. The number 20 identifies that we want to look back twenty days for our minimum price search. If you wanted to look back a different amount of days, then enter whatever number you desire in place of the "20" that is shown (be sure to keep the "-" in front of the number, however).

-

In the same line, you will see the price criteria highlighted in green (5.0). If you feel $5 is too low, and would rather scan for files that don't fall below $10, then replace 5.0 with 10.0.

5. This brings you back to the "Select Reports/Scans" window from step 3. This time, however, you will find an entry named "QP Symbol List for Insider TA" somewhere in the list (you might find it at the end, by scrolling, or placed alphabetically), which is the title you entered in step 4 above.

6. To run "QP Symbol List for Insider TA", enable it by checking the box and then click "Run". This will begin the Quotes Plus scan operation, and may take about 10-20 minutes to complete (take a coffee break).

7. When the scan is finished, the list file that you identified in step 4 (MOSTALL.LST) can then be loaded into Insider TA's File Entry Panel. Recall from step 4 that this list file will be written to directory c:\Quotes Plus Data\lists, unless you specify elsewhere.
